In the population coding framework, we consider how the response distributions affect output distribution. A general theory for the output of neuronal population code is presented when the spike train is a renewal process. Under a given condition on the response distribution, the most probable value of the output distribution is the center of input-preferred values, whereas in the other cases the most improbable value of the output distribution is the center of input-preferred values or there arcno most probable states. Depending on the exact form of the response distributions, the variance of the output distributions ran either enlarge or reduce the tuning width of the tuning curves.

Anisotropic singular perturbations of linear hyperbolic problems are considered. A description of the asymptotic behaviour of the solution as ε → 0 is given. In the case of cylindrical domains, we improve the rate of convergence in regions far from the lateral boundary.

Soc. 126 (1998), 3045-3053] and [Computers Math. Applic. 35 (1998), 27-34]) are improved significantly. The discussion in this paper underlines, in addition to generality, the unifying aspects of our result.
